Beginnings

Heroic Epiphany is an idea ready to graduate to a plan.  I've already begun some play testing and I intend to continue developing it.  Epiphany will improve role-playing games by making them:

  • easy to understand
  • easy to setup
  • fast paced
  • flexible
Gotta have bullet lists, right?

Epiphany wants to take advantage of the gamer's love of cards, and avoid thick expensive rule books.  The rule book itself should look like little more than a pamphlet; it's a handy set of guidelines to help the storyteller manage the only thing we really need the rule books for: Chance.  The thick books will have to devote all of their pages to providing inspiration instead of dictating rules to be followed.  I know many people enjoy having standardized rules, and for them there are many rule systems to choose from.  Epiphany prefers to focus on story without sacrificing interactivity, luck, and a strong sense of danger.  The cards, also, will be handy guides, like mental bookmarks to remind everyone about the state of things.

I still have a lot of work to do to make Epiphany a real product that I can share with others.  In the meantime, we'll test it with various stories and storytellers.  This blog will be a diary of its journey.  I will post feedback, my own and others, from campaigns we've played.  I'll also think-out-loud about revisions to improve upon the system.  Eventually, art and design work will be posted, and perhaps even milestones and release dates.

Despite the unlikelihood that someone will attempt to steal them, I'm hesitant to put all of the big ideas in here.  I will have to overcome this inhibition of sharing eventually, but for the time being, we'll decide on a case by case basis if I'm ready to divulge or let someone I don't know give it a try with their own groups.

Updates should come in monthly, but it depends on how much game time I get in (which is currently about one good game session a month).  Thank you for reading!  Feel free to leave your comments below.
